Welcome to the Alcester United Church of Christ

The Alcester United Church of Christ is located in the small town of Alcester, population 900, nestled amongst the rolling hills of southeast South Dakota. Alcester is located about half-way between the state's largest city, Sioux Falls, to the north, and Sioux City, Iowa, to the south.

The church was first organized in February, 1877, following a series of revival meetings held by William S. Bell, a missionary from the American Sunday School Union. It was named ‘Antioch’ after the Biblical city where the disciples were first called Christians. There were 18 charter members.

The church re-organized as "Grove Hill Congregational Church", the eighth Congregational church in the State of South Dakota, on March 4, 1877, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Rev. Tim Worthington, Pastor

"Let's get down to the nitty, gritty; I'm Tim Worthington from Kansas City" was my musical intro in 1970-74 with the K-State Singers - thankfully you can't view my picture from that era!  From there I attended Central Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City.

In 1978, I became the associate pastor of First Baptist Church in McPherson, KS for 8 years.  The desire to seek another avenue of ministry led me to Kansas University (KU) in 1985 to study business and ethics - a masters degree program not fully realized because I started my own painting contracting business and for 20 years ran that in Lawrence, KS.

In 1994, still maintaining my standing with American Baptist Church, I was granted dual standing with the UCC.  After a 6 month part-time interim at Plymouth Congregational in Lawrence, I then received a call to the Coummunity UCC in Carbondale, KS and pastored there for nearly 10 years, along with my painting business.

In 2003 I married Rev. Kathryn Timpany, and we have a beautiful blended family:  son Matt, his wife Wendy Weigel and our grandson Alec, live in Indianapolis ;  daughter Andi is married to Tony Greco and lives in Topeka with our newest grandson, Kellen;  daughter Evin is married to David Alcindor and lives in Wichita, KS;  son Taylor is a high-schooler in Prairie Village, KS and visits us as often as possible.

In 2005 Kathryn and I moved from Kansas to Sioux Falls, SD where Kathryn is Senior Pastor at the First Congregational Church. Since April 2005 I have been the pastor at Alcester UCC.
